RECAP 2: Mulligan?

The Penguins went into Chicago for their second game in two days to start off the season. Some teams haven’t played a single game yet so this schedule completely makes sense. Good thing it’s Friday, because you may need a drink or nine.

There was no reason to believe Chicago wasn’t going to come out ape shit crazy. After being swept by the Predators in the first round the only thing Chicago players heard all summer was that they only scored 3 goals in the entire series. Maybe begging for Saad back was key, because he scored that many in this one. The Antti Niemi experience lasted for 9 minutes and 16 seconds. He faced 13 shots and heard the goal song 4 times. The Golden Knights put Calvin Pickard on waivers yesterday, just saying. Matt Murray came into the game and decided he wanted to hear more of the goal song. The result was 5 first period goals for Chicago and the Pens having less D than a lesbian porno.

We’re a hopeful bunch. Maybe they could slowly chip away at the lead? Sure why not. Two minutes into the second the Penguins got what they wanted when Phil fired the Pill on the 5 on 3 powerplay:

A minute later Patrick Kane would allegedly rape the Pens for his 18th point of the night and that reopened the flood gates. Image result for flood gates gif

The second would end 8-1.

The Blackhawks would add 2 more goals in the third to get to double digits. In the last 2 years the Penguins have played the Blackhawks 2 times per year. They are 0-3-1 in the regular season against them with 2 Stanley Cups. Chill out, it’s the second game of the season.

I’m sure this was a comfortable plane ride home.

THOUGHTS

  • The Pens went 6 for 6 on the penalty kill, so there’s that! The team continued using a 6 forward option on the PK, with Rowney and McKegg getting the most time followed by Kuhnhackl, Wilson, Rust, and Hagelin. All defenders got over 4 minutes on the PK except for Schultz and Maatta, who were not used (Maatta was on for 1 minute).
  • Conor Sheary had the worst +/- on the team for the forwards posting a -5 in 10:52 of playing time, which was the third lowest amount of TOI on the roster. Olli Maatta and Kris Letang were also a -5. Ian Cole and Matt Hunwick posted a -1 as a pairing, so that’s a positive.
  • Tonight you saw a team that has been gearing up all offseason to play again against a team that just played last night and decided to have a night off. It’s the second game of the season and it was worth 2 points, that’s it.
